Robert Hooke, Micrographia,

these kind of Objects there is much more difficulty to discover the true shape, then [sic] of those visible to the naked eye, the same Object seeming quite differing [sic], in one position to the Light, from what it really is, and may be discover'd in another. And therefore I never began to make any draught before by many examinations in several lights, and in several positions to those lights, I had discover'd the true form. (xxiv)

John Locke, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding

if by the help of such Microscopical Eyes (if I may so call them,) a Man could penetrate farther than ordinary into the secret Composition, and radical Texture of bodies, he would not make any great advantage by the change, if such an acute Sight would not serve to conduct him to the Market and Exchange.

The design, your Lordship sees, is good,
the colouring transparent,—the drawing
not amiss;—or to speak more like a man
of science,—and measure my piece in the
painter's scale, divided into 20,—I be-
lieve, my Lord, the out-lines will turn
out as 12,—the composition as 9,—the
colouring as 6,—the expression 13 and
a half,—and the design,—if I may be
allowed, my Lord, to understand my own
design, and supposing absolute perfec-
tion in designing, to be as 20,—I think
it cannot well fall short of 19. Be-
sides all this, -- there is keeping in it, and
the dark strokes in the HOBBY-HORSE,
(which is a secondary figure, and a kind
of back-ground to the whole) give great
force to the principal lights in your own
figure, and make it come off wonder-
fully;——and besides, there is an air of
originality in the tout ensemble. (TS, vol 1, ch 9)
