Tristram Shandy, l'antesignano

Tristram Shandy, the precursor

The course will be focused on The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, gent. by Laurence Sterne, the eccentric masterpiece of 18th-century English literature.
Through the centuries, this novel has been considered the precursor of historical avant-gardes and postmodern metafiction, but also a hypertext ante litteram. The reason has to be found in the fact that Sterne put in question the form of the novel as linear and verbal narration, as well as the constraint of the codex (object-book) on storytelling. In Tristram Shandy, the construction of the self, the writing process and the reading performance do converge, and the reader is asked to decodify an articulated verbal-visual-sensory code which is unpredictable, chaotic and sequential. For its experimental intrinsic peculiarities, Tristram Shandy has been a leading light through the centuries.

In the first part of the course the literary features of the work will be investigated, in relation to William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds critical and artistic works, in order to understand its future legacy (see futurism, dadaism and electronic writing in digital environment).
The relationship between information, communication and storytelling will be the key thread running through the course.
The movie A Cock and a Bull Story (2006) by Michael Winterbottom will be covered.
